Impact tester |
The impact tester is an analytical device, which provides a prognosis for example of the behaviour of the coating-substrate bond under mechanical stress. The fatigue limit under alternating stress of a PVD coating can be determined very quickly without having to resort to expensive test bench tests.
The continual impact of a hard metal or ceramic ball on a surface will simulate dynamic stress. During a series of tests, individual areas of the material surface are subjected to different levels of stress until the coating ruptures.
The results gained from these tests are adequate documented. Using FEM-based mathematical models, the specific Wöhler curves and Smith diagrams for each particular coating-substrate bond can be detected.
