Proven products made even better

The Dutch tool manufacturer Jabro is a long-time companion of CemeCon in the diamond sector. The company, which belongs to the Seco Group, was one of the very first to offer diamond-coated tools. Over the years, Jabro was always immediately involved in the latest CemeCon developments. This is now once again the case during a “diamond upgrade” project with the CemeCon CCDia^®08 coating solution. It provided Jabro with a considerable “performance lifting” for tools from the product line for graphite and green-compact machining – including performance increases of up to 30 percent.

In this specific case, “diamond” minishank and mini-spherical cutters, as well as conventional shank and spherical cutters were put on the test bench in the Jabro product range. “Our goal was to increase the economy of the tools, i.e. primarily the quality, performance and process reliability were to be optimized so that in the end the customer can benefit from an improved value for the money”, explained Marcel Aarts from Jabro.

When machining graphite, for example, there is approximately no plastic deformation of the brittle material on penetration of the tool cutting edge. The consequence is that no typical chip is formed, as this is the case when machining ductile materials. In addition to this difficult tool behavior, the dominating wear mechanism becomes apparent on the tool itself in the form of abrasion caused by the flow of micro dust against it and friction.

“The diamond coating must be extremely resistant to abrasion and reproduce the 3D geometry by 100 percent”, said Inka Harrand, Sales Coating Service at CemeCon. “Both are unified by the crystalline coating solution CCDia^®08, which is predestined for machining materials with a low tendency to gum up to the tool”

Many years of close cooperation

Due to the many years of close cooperation, especially in the diamond sector, both companies know each other exactly and the products are intimately familiar, enabling the optimization loop for the Jabro diamond product line to be completed with outstanding results in an extremely short time. Inka Harrand said, “With a special tool coating adapted to graphite machining, the wear resistance was greatly improved. This leads to economical, and above all, controlled machining of graphite.” Marcel Aarts added, “The objective has been achieved - extreme process reliability and increased quality with excellent surface qualities. This goes hand in hand with a performance increase of 20 to 30 percent compared to the old catalog
tools!”

High customer satisfaction

The new tools are a big hit with the customers. For example, at the Dutch mold builder MATREX from Hapert. Marcel Aarts explained, “Companies of this kind often manufacture electrodes as one-of a-kind products or in small series, for example for the cell phone industry, which comes out with new designs more or less once a month. This results in fewer repeat orders for the injection molds. When manufacturing the molds highest process stability and top quality, such as surface quality, are often what’s important.”

MATREX engineers already joined the team at an early stage to contribute their requests and suggestions. Performance, process stability and an increase in the size of the product range at Jabro Tools with regard to different lengths and corner radii then matched the needs exactly. Marius van der Heijden, Programmer/Operator at MATREX b.v. said, “That’s the key to our flexibility, as we almost never produce exactly the same product more than once.”

“The 2004 diamond upgrade project between CemeCon and Jabro Tools was a complete success”, emphasized Marcel Aarts. “A close partnership is the basis for success on the market. Of course, the work doesn’t end here. During regular technical meetings, we inform each other about and discuss new developments and ways to further improve both Jabro Tools and CemeCon products.”
